I see and hear the news about Syria. I am a child of the war. I feel for the children. I am there with the Mothers and the Fathers.
My Mother told me of the soldiers returning from the Russian front, and the effects of the mustard gas on them. Their nervous system was compromised, their lives were painful and short. Every day, every breath was difficult.
That was 70 years ago. Today we recall "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King, Jr.
I ask President Obama, "What would MLK, Jr. do?"
Would HE threaten to send BOMBS to another country?
Would HE plan to bomb the regime that has been violent toward their civilians?
Would HE exchange violence for violence?
I believe he would use the power of the PEN and NOT the SWORD.
He would speak, he would protest, he would march against the evil of the regime.
His speeches would MOVE people to protest against what is going on.
You and I know, there will be innocent children, families, hospitals, schools destroyed by those that insist they have the best intentions. We cannot perform "surgical strikes" that are perfect- why even endanger the civilians, OURS OR THEIRS one bit more????
Why spend resources to begin fresh surgery, when we have NOT healed from past surgeries in countries in which we are still closing up?
It is time for the next Martin to step up. Gandhi ideas are needed today more than ever. We repeat the errors of the past and do not learn from our history.
