Such an amazing autumn day to drive into the countryside! The bright blue sky, the shining sun, fields of tall bleached corn stalks, black awns falling from ripe ears. Pumpkins colors pop out against the green grass, and the white barn in the back alive with gobbles of the cooped up turkeys. I arrive early, and hear a bus broke down. The team will be a little late. I fall asleep, catching a nap in the fresh country breeze.
I am at the Niederman Family Farm for the final football game of the 2012 season. (I wrote about the field for the first game we had, see blog, "First Game Seventh Grade").
I don't mind port-o-lets when the wind carries off smells. Even the Shetland ponies and cows smell fresh. Two black kittens romp on the dirt road, safe from city traffic.
I get the folding chair and iced tea to walk out a long way to the field.
I notice a long line of cars parked close to the field, "Handicapped Parking!" If I had known, I could have saved myself a lot of carrying...
It is a joy to be here, to sit in the midst of the most beautiful day and watch the last game of the seventh and eighth grade football season.
"I am SO glad that was our last practice!" Weslee announced yesterday. I guess he was getting burned out.
But the game begins, and almost immediately Kenny runs it in for a touchdown. I think Enoch got the 2 points, and we have our first eight points. The Mustangs get the ball and march up the field, very slowly, but they keep moving. It seems like they take the entire quarter to get close to their goal, and then we jump the gun, and they get even closer, and finally, after the LONGEST, slowest progress ever, they make a TD, and are on the scoreboard. Within a few seconds we have the next TD. I think Kenny ran in another one. Then They had the ball, but it was turned over(was that when Weslee got an interception?). Anyway, Ryan ran in one TD, and I do not think we got the two point conversion. As our points increased, you could see that Calvin was getting more and more tackles. He knew who had the ball, and went after them. At one point he got the ball and made a touch down, which was then called back. The very next play he got the ball again, and made a great first down. I think Ryan had another TD.
Weslee also made a TD, when Kenny threw the ball to him. It was a high flyer into the end zone. I really was amazed he could get it crowded amongst all those players.
The ending score was 8 for the mustangs, and 48 for Finneytown.
Four jets flew in formation above the field as we folded up our chairs, prepared to leave.
Certainly a positive note for the last game of the season, really a beautiful day to remember the game.
Even the officials were congenial; yes, I think I might like this game after all.
Brian Watson added a comment to my question if I got the final score right:
"52 to 8 was the final. I didn't look through your scoring to see what you have missed but that was the final. A great game and awesome catch by Weslee over the defender. The defender had about 6 inches height advantage but Weslee outjumped him. Great game Weslee Berns."
