They don't get it
I was watching a Boris Eifman choreography of a New Year's waltz. It brought back so many memories of watching my Mother work and design ballets.
Most dancers and programs do not get what ballet or dance are all about. They perform steps on stage. They act or move across space.
The Eifman ballet was different... WAY different, like when my Mother designed ballet . It took me back to when I would sit, back to the mirror, age eight, watching her work through a piece of music, choreographing a work of art.
You see, to "get" ballet or dance, you have to see it as a painting. Actually in the realm of visual arts, it only "works" in space with the contrasts of the other shapes, motions and movements that are "happening". It is basically irrelevant what the details are, as long as they are within the framework of the work.
One part of the Eifman piece, a royal family portrait simply moved forward and backward looking into the camera. It was so meaningful, told a story so deep, about their feelings that the young royal lady should not be dancing with a young man, and when she rejoined them, they repositioned themselves. A story within a portrait. Genius! NO ballet steps whatever....
Dance combines the music with the visual art of a moving painting to create a living beauty and expanse of ideas in your mind that lives forever, stronger and more real than reality.
Most people, even those in the field of dance, just don't get it.
