Conversations at the game
"And the snake was floating on the surface of the lake, trying to swallow the 5 pound fish, unable to swim, but the size of the fish too large for the snake to swallow."
"Where's Weslee?", he asked over the newspaper article being read.
"Your son is the kid at short stop with his name on the shirt, number two in the outfield," implying he should recognize his son.
"Property owners were wary about fishing in the lake. Swimmers were warned about the danger of encountering this snake since the possibility of being bitten was eminent. Since the snake was not caught or identified, there is a distinct possibility it may be poisonous."
"Did he just make an out throwing to first? I just missed that. Is that the third out? Is that Weslee batting?"
"He leads off the batting order."
"What do you think we should do? It is dangerous living by that lake. The property owners need to do something. I think you should take the dogs and search for it. You should send out flyers, with 'We find dogs, cats, and snakes' on them."
"For a snake that large it was probably a pet that escaped, and the owner wants it back. I don't think it is poisonous, and it's probably a constrictor. What happened?"
Last game I had asked him not to sit near me. We divorced after thirty years living together. This game his lady friend came, too.
"Weslee made the first run. He snuck around, and made home on a throw past second. "
"Thanks for letting us sit near you." "I'm calling James. Tell him about the snake. Hi, guess what is in the paper. A story about a huge snake. You better watch it when you go fishing." He hands the phone to his friend. She reads him the story. After some laughter she hands the phone back. Several innings have passed. Several more runs for our team, we are doing great. Wes had made three runs. Lydia made two outs catching fly balls hit into right field. Our team wins. We end the season with 16 wins and no losses.
After the game photos are taken, and then the coaches surprise the players with water balloons.
