Dream Pastries
At a young age driving to Florida we stopped at the Krispy Kreme Donut Shop and Life was never again the same. From then on, we always scanned the horizon for the first palm tree, the ocean, and the first Krispy Kreme sign. It is a delight comparable to no other. No Dunkin Donut or bakery donut, or fancy doughnut compares. I will say that the Eagle Bay Donut Shop hot fresh cinnamon home made donut is a delicacy all its own. Different again, and not to be compared with this yeast one. Eagle Bay donut is a secret recipe cake variety dipped in peanut oil, quickly fried, and then coated in sugar and cinnamon. Some prefer it without the final coating of cinnamon, but we always loved the extra sugars. Once it cooled it didn't have the special warmth we wanted to experience, so we went when the cakes were just being made, usually on a Sunday morning. We could see large sheets with little misshapen soldiers lying in neat rows atop one another while people lined up buying bakers' dozens to take home for the campers' breakfasts. They can be reheated for a few seconds in the microwave- thank God for the invention of that miracle! Before that we would not think of buying a cool one!
Weslee came home last night with a box of a dozen Krispy Kreme donuts. "You talk to much on the phone," he announced! "Last time we went right by the Krispy Kreme factory on our trip, and didn't see them make donuts!" This morning there were only 3 donuts left. Brianna had a few choice words for that. She, however, had bought those striped Keebler cookies, and had dunked them in milk, so she was one to talk...This morning Wes informed me, "Just put a donut into the microwave for 8 seconds and I'll have it for breakfast." The tradition lives on..."Oh, Mom, you can have one, too." I feel honored. I see ocean and palm trees, and donuts marching to the tune of whispering voices and awed travelers. I am again 10 years old, standing at the site of my first Krispy Kreme Doughnut Factory visit.
